Boiler installation in Chelsea

  • Townhouses that are tall and narrow, where the plant’s position affects pressure higher up
  • Mews houses with tight access and few options for routing outside
  • Listed buildings where the flue and outside pipework must be settled before choosing a model

Chelsea’s mews houses usually have the boiler on the ground floor, in what was once the garage or stable, with the flue coming straight out onto the mews. A terminal at that height, where people walk past, needs a guard, and it must sit clear of the front door and any opening window. The mews itself can be the harder part. Some are private, some are cobbled and narrow, and a van may not get in at all, so the boiler and cylinder are carried from the nearest bay. Residents’ parking covers most of the borough, so bay suspensions need booking ahead. For listed houses, the flue position and any new opening need listed building consent before the installer can commit to a date. The Gas Safe notification to building control happens after the work, and it is quite separate from any consent the council gives.

Questions

Questions we often get

Do you work in Chelsea?

We do. Chelsea falls within Kensington and Chelsea, covering the SW3, SW10, SW1 postcodes, and our engineers are out across Greater London from our Fulham office every day.

Would the weak top-floor shower get better with a new boiler?

Not by itself. In a tall house the usual cause is the height from the water source to the outlet, along with pipes too narrow for the distance. A pump or an accumulator fixes that. A new boiler does not, and anyone selling one for that reason is selling you the wrong fix.

Can the hot water cylinder go in the basement of our townhouse?

Often it is the best place for space, but hot water then has a long way to travel to the top floor, and you wait at the tap while it arrives. A secondary return, a small loop with its own pump, keeps hot water moving so it comes through quickly. Getting a large cylinder down a narrow basement stair also needs planning, so we measure the access before choosing the size.

How much will it cost?

Before an engineer starts, you are given a price for the job. Should something hidden in a wall change what is needed, we stop and discuss it with you first, instead of pressing on and sending the bill later.
