Boiler installation in Wimbledon

  • Bigger houses with two or more bathrooms that may well be used at the same time
  • Homes where a combi went in because it was cheap and has always struggled to keep up
  • Boilers sized by occupancy and radiator count, not by whatever was fitted before

The larger Wimbledon houses often have a vented cylinder that has already outlived several boilers. Before replacing the boiler, it is worth checking the cylinder’s condition and its coil, because a new boiler paired with a tired, slow cylinder still gives slow hot water. The choice is between keeping the vented setup with its loft tanks or moving to an unvented cylinder, which depends on the mains supply and where a larger cylinder could sit. The flats nearer the town centre are simpler and usually suit a combi. Period houses near the Common may be in a conservation area, so a new flue on a front or side wall facing the road needs checking with Merton’s planning team before the position is fixed. Most family houses up the hill have a drive, which makes the day easier, and the old boiler and cylinder can go straight out to the van.

Questions

Questions we often get

Do you work in Wimbledon?

We do. Wimbledon falls within Merton, covering the SW19, SW20 postcodes, and our engineers are out across Greater London from our Fulham office every day.

How do you work out the right boiler size for us?

We look at how many radiators and bathrooms you have and how many people really live there. The size of the old boiler does not count, as that could easily have been wrong as well. Too big and it cycles on and off and wears out early. Too small and it never keeps up. Get it right when it is fitted, because it cannot be changed later.

Do the radiators and pipework have to be replaced along with the boiler?

Not usually. What matters is the condition of the water inside the system. Older systems in big houses carry years of sludge, and fitting a new boiler onto that shortens its life. The system should be cleaned, dosed with inhibitor, and fitted with a filter as part of the installation. Radiators that stay cold at the bottom after cleaning may be worth replacing, and we point those out before quoting rather than afterwards.

How much will it cost?

Before an engineer starts, you are given a price for the job. Should something hidden in a wall change what is needed, we stop and discuss it with you first, instead of pressing on and sending the bill later.
