Boiler replacement across London

Replacement is worth it when a boiler breaks down again and again, runs up bills it should not, or is past any sensible repair. Before that point it often is not, and many boilers are condemned too soon by someone with a new one to sell. Ask us. If yours still has years of life in it, we will tell you.

Read this before you ring

You may find you can sort some of this yourself, without calling us. We are fine with that, and would rather you knew it.

When a new boiler is the better use of money

As a rough guide: the boiler is more than about twelve years old, the part that has failed is a costly one, or the model can no longer get parts. Short of that, repairing usually comes out ahead, and we will tell you so even though replacing would be the larger job for us.

Compare two figures, not one

Every replacement quote should come alongside the cost of fixing the boiler you already have. If no one has given you a repair price, ask for one. Choosing on the strength of a single figure is not really choosing.

Think twice about an identical swap

Putting back exactly the same boiler is the easy route, but it is not always the best one. Replacement is your real opportunity to correct a boiler that was too small, the wrong type for the home, or squeezed into an awkward corner from the start. If the old one never kept the house properly warm, fitting its twin simply repeats the error. Talk to Ninja Plumbers about what genuinely suits the property before the same model gets ordered again.

Whether parts can still be found matters

Some boilers still work perfectly well but are no longer supported. Once a common fault on your model cannot be fixed because the part is unobtainable, the sums change, however old the boiler happens to be.

Cost

What changes the price

A replacement is priced from the old boiler outwards. What it is, where it sits, what it is connected to and what has to come out with it decide most of the quote, before the new boiler is even chosen.

What comes out with the old boiler

Taking a wall-hung combi off the wall is quick. A floor-standing boiler, a back boiler behind a gas fire, or a loft tank and cylinder that are no longer needed all take longer to remove, and some leave a fireplace or cupboard to make good.

Whether the flue can stay where it is

Even when the new boiler goes in the same spot, the old flue position may not meet today’s rules — too close to a window, a door, a boundary or the ground. If it has to move, that is extra work even on an otherwise straight swap.

Controls the rules now require

Building regulations set minimum controls for a new boiler: a programmer, a room thermostat and, in most homes, valves that let each radiator be controlled on its own. If your system has none of these, fitting them is part of the replacement.

The pipework you are keeping

A new boiler inherits the system it is connected to. Old radiator valves that weep, pipework full of sludge or a cylinder on its last legs can all need attention first, otherwise the new boiler is working against the same problems as the old one.

We agree the price with you before any work begins, and accept both card and cash.

Your questions

Questions we often get

How can I tell whether my boiler should be replaced?

Look at its age, what the failed part costs and whether parts can still be found. An expensive fault on a boiler more than about twelve years old usually means replacement. On a younger one, repair tends to be the better choice.

Do you also give a price for repairing it?

Yes, every time a repair is possible. You ought to be weighing up two figures, not being given one.

Could the new boiler go in a different place?

Yes, and replacement is the obvious time to move it. The job gains some pipework and flue work, but it often solves a problem you have put up with for years.

Does the new boiler have to be the same type?

Not necessarily. Replacement is the right moment to think again about that. If a second bathroom has been added since your current boiler went in, a system boiler with a cylinder may now suit the house better than fitting a second combi.

Is it better to replace the boiler before it fails completely?

It can be, if the boiler is old, unreliable and parts for it are getting scarce. Replacing on your own timetable means you can compare quotes calmly and pick a time outside the coldest weeks, rather than accepting whatever is available during a January breakdown. But a boiler that is old and still running well does not need replacing on age alone, and we will tell you if yours is in that position.

Will a new boiler lower my heating bills?

Often, if the old one is a non-condensing boiler from before the mid-2000s, because modern condensing boilers turn more of the gas into heat. How much you notice depends on how the system is controlled and whether the radiators are sized so the boiler can run at lower temperatures. A new boiler on a system with no thermostat and sludged-up radiators will save far less than the brochure suggests.
