Shower pump installation across London

If your shower draws from a cold tank in the loft, a pump can turn it into one you actually enjoy using. If it runs directly from a combi boiler, no pump can be added, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling you something that will not work. That is why Ninja Plumbers starts every shower pump job by finding out which of those two systems your home has.

Useful to know

Before you book

Some of this could mean you never need a callout, and we would rather you heard it from us first.

A combi system cannot take a pump

Combis heat mains water as you use it, and pumping directly off the mains is not allowed. When a combi-fed shower is weak, the cause lies elsewhere: the supply pipe, a valve left half shut, or a shower head full of scale.

Head type matters more than it sounds

Whether you need a positive or negative head pump depends on the exact height of the cold tank above the shower outlet. Choose wrongly and the pump will not start, or will not stop. That mistake is the most frequent reason a new pump fails within months.

Pumps make noise, so placement counts

Screw a pump to a joist beneath a bedroom and the whole house will hear it. Set on a solid base with anti-vibration feet and flexible hoses on both sides, it becomes a quiet hum in the airing cupboard.

Trapped air ruins pumps

Pumps that die young have usually been drawing air through the tank feed. A correctly installed feed does more for its lifespan than the brand you choose.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Will a pump work on my flat’s shower?

Only when the shower is supplied by a stored cold tank and a hot water cylinder. On a combi or an unvented mains-pressure system, it cannot, though there is normally some other way to improve it.

My pump carries on after the shower is off. Why?

Most often a valve letting by or a dripping outlet is holding the flow switch on. Now and then the pump is at fault. Get it seen to soon, as running on is what burns pumps out.

What lifespan should I expect from a shower pump?

Years, not decades. Installation counts for more than the price you paid: the feed pipes, the mounting and the correct head type largely decide how long it keeps going.

Can a noisy pump be made quieter?

Often it can. Flexible hoses, anti-vibration mounts and relocating it away from a surface that resonates cure most noise without any new parts.
