WCs fitted and replaced

Toilet installation across London

Taking out an old toilet and fitting a new one in its place takes a morning and is no more complicated than it sounds. Moving a WC, fixing a wall-hung pan to a support frame, or installing one where no soil connection has ever existed is another matter. Those jobs raise different questions, and it pays to ask them before you buy the suite, not after it has been delivered.

Good to know

Read this before you ring

You may find you can sort some of this yourself, without calling us. We are fine with that, and would rather you knew it.

Take measurements before ordering

Whether a toilet will suit your existing pipework comes down to the gap between the wall and the centre of the waste, plus the height and width of the cistern. Send us a side-on photo of your current toilet along with the model you like, and we can confirm it before you place the order.

A wall-hung pan needs a frame and a strong wall

The pan is not held up by plasterboard. Its weight sits on a steel frame concealed behind the wall. It looks neater and the floor underneath is easier to clean, but the frame takes up more room in the wall than most people imagine. In a cramped London cloakroom, that depth is often what settles whether wall-hung can work at all.

Hidden cisterns must stay reachable

Sooner or later someone will need to get at what is behind the panel, because the flush valve and inlet valve are the parts that wear out. An access panel is essential. Tiling over the lot is a choice that is costly to reverse.

A toilet that rocks will start to leak

Over the months, the movement loosens the waste seal, and by the time water marks the ceiling below it has normally been leaking for some time. If your toilet shifts when you sit on it, get it sorted now.

Cost

What changes the price

Swapping a toilet is one of the smaller plumbing jobs there is, yet quotes for it still differ. Nearly all the difference comes from what happens behind and underneath the pan rather than the toilet you pick.

The style of toilet

A close-coupled toilet on an existing waste is the simplest fit. Back-to-wall pans need a unit or boxing to hide the cistern, and wall-hung pans need a steel frame and a false wall built, boarded and tiled before the pan goes on.

Lining up with the soil pipe

If the new pan’s outlet meets the existing soil pipe at the same height and position, a standard connector does it. Different heights, an offset, or an old cement joint into cast iron that has to be cut out carefully all add parts and time.

The floor under the old one

An old toilet that has leaked for years often leaves soft or rotten boards underneath, and they need replacing before a new pan is screwed down. A new toilet with a smaller footprint can also leave an untiled outline where the old one stood.

Where the water supply comes in

Older cisterns are usually fed from the side. Many new ones take the supply from underneath or from behind, so the pipe and isolating valve have to be moved to suit. It is a small change, but worth knowing about when choosing a model.

We agree the price with you before any work begins, and accept both card and cash.

Your questions

Questions we often get

Will you fit a toilet I bought myself?

Yes, Ninja Plumbers regularly fits toilets that customers have supplied. Send us the model ahead of the visit so we can check the waste position lines up and let you know if any adaptors are needed.

How much time does a simple swap need?

Replacing like for like usually takes a morning. Anything that means moving the waste, or fitting a wall-hung frame or concealed cistern, takes longer, and we quote for it once we have seen the room.

Can the toilet be moved to a different part of the room?

In some cases. It hinges on whether the waste can run downhill to the soil stack. Where it cannot, the fallback is a macerator, and we will explain that honestly rather than reach for it by default.

Will you remove the old toilet?

Yes, and that is included. Where possible, old ceramics are recycled instead of going into a skip.

Can a toilet go under the stairs or in a cupboard?

Often, yes, and in a London terrace the space under the stairs is a popular spot for a cloakroom WC. What decides it is whether a waste can reach the soil pipe or drain with enough fall, whether there is headroom to use it comfortably, and ventilation — a WC without a window needs an extractor fan. Where a gravity waste is not possible, a macerator is the fallback, with its own trade-offs.

Can you fit a shower toilet with a built-in bidet wash?

Yes, but check the room before buying one. Most shower toilets need a fused electrical supply close to the pan, which our electricians can fit, as well as a water feed and the usual waste. Some are wall-hung and need a frame, and the seat unit adds depth, which matters in a narrow cloakroom. Send us the model and a photo of the space and we will say whether it will work.
