Emergency plumber in Wimbledon
Many of Wimbledon’s bigger houses are still on vented systems fed from a loft tank. If that fails, water pours down from the top floor, so knowing where the tank’s stopcock is matters just as much as finding the mains.

Emergency plumber in Wimbledon
- Failed loft tanks and cylinders sending water down through the house from the top
- Older vented systems in which closing the mains stopcock is not enough to stop the water
- Bigger houses where water has spread a long way before anyone spots it
In one of the bigger Wimbledon houses, a burst on an upper floor can reach the ground floor through two ceilings before anyone downstairs notices. Once the mains and the loft tank are both off, switch off the immersion heater too, because heating an emptied cylinder can burn out the element. If the hot side is leaking, the airing cupboard is where the cylinder and its valves usually live. Nearer the station, the picture changes. Victorian terraces and flats there behave more like inner London, with shared pipework and sometimes a neighbour’s stopcock involved. For night visits to the larger houses, electric gates and alarm systems are the usual hold-ups. Tell us the gate code or leave it open, and let us know if the alarm covers the loft or the rooms we need to reach. On most roads here parking is not the problem; spotting a house number in the dark can be.

Questions we often get
Do you work in Wimbledon?
We do. Wimbledon falls within Merton, covering the SW19, SW20 postcodes, and our engineers are out across Greater London from our Fulham office every day.
Why is water still coming through after I shut off the mains?
Most likely a loft tank is still draining out through the leak. The tank outlet normally has its own gate valve. Close that, then open every hot tap so the system drains down, and the flow will stop.
Should I turn the boiler off as well as the water?
Yes, if the leak is anywhere on the heating or hot water side. On an older vented system the boiler can keep firing while the small tank that tops up the heating is cut off at the mains, and running it short of water risks damage. Turn it off at the switch or the programmer and leave it off. The engineer will refill and check the system before it runs again, rather than you guessing at the pressure.
How much will it cost?
Before an engineer starts, you are given a price for the job. Should something hidden in a wall change what is needed, we stop and discuss it with you first, instead of pressing on and sending the bill later.
