The make

Baxi boilers

For decades Baxi boilers have been a normal sight in British homes. Potterton and Main now belong to the same group, which means plenty of London homes have a Baxi-group boiler, whatever the badge says. The boilers in use cover several decades, and Ninja Plumbers engineers work on the lot, from today’s combis to boilers over twenty years old that are still running.

The Baxi range

Baxi is part of BDR Thermea, the European group that also owns Potterton, Main and the Heatrae Sadia cylinder brand. Current Baxi boilers carry series numbers such as 400, 600 and 800, with combis alongside system and heat-only models. In London the older installed base is the bigger story: Duo-tec, Platinum and EcoBlue combis from the 2000s and 2010s, and in older houses, Bermuda back boilers hidden in the fireplace behind a gas fire.

Faults we often find on Baxi boilers

  • Faults with the fan or pressure switch on older boilers
  • Scale in the heat exchanger across the hard-water parts of London
  • Very old boilers where parts are getting harder to find
  • Bermuda back boilers behind gas fires that are still used every day
  • Combis from the 2000s and 2010s old enough for bigger parts to fail

This list reflects what Ninja Plumbers finds across Baxi boilers in general. It is not a diagnosis of yours, and we confirm any fault on site before giving a price.

Baxi servicing

On a current Baxi the warranty usually depends on registration and a yearly service, so check your warranty terms. A back boiler is different: it shares the chimney with the gas fire in front of it, so the engineer checks the fire, the boiler and the chimney as one job, and the flue check matters most. A carbon monoxide alarm in that room is a sensible precaution.

Repair it or replace it?

On a Baxi combi from the last ten years, most faults are worth repairing. On Duo-tec and Platinum units it depends on what has failed: a fan or sensor, repair it; a heat exchanger or main board, get the replacement figure first. Replacing a back boiler is a bigger job than a normal swap. The boiler and usually the fire come out, and the new boiler goes elsewhere with its own flue and new pipework, so plan it for a warm month.

FAQs

Questions about Baxi boilers

My Baxi is more than twenty years old. Is it still repairable?
Sometimes it is, and sometimes it is better left. It comes down to whether the part for that fault can still be found; some can, others went long ago. With a boiler that old we give a frank view, and say if a repair means paying for a boiler with perhaps a year left in it.
What is the boiler sitting behind my gas fire?
It is a back boiler, and the Baxi Bermuda is among the most common. It heats your radiators and hot water cylinder independently of the fire in front of it. It can still be serviced, and the chimney gets checked at the same time.
Is a Baxi the same boiler as a Potterton or a Main?
They share a group but not a boiler. Each make has its own model numbers, so the correct part depends on precisely which one you own. We read that from the data badge on the boiler.
Can you repair and service my Baxi boiler?
Yes. Our gas work is done by Gas Safe registered engineers, as the law requires for any gas boiler, whatever the make.

Problem with your Baxi?

Tell us the model and whatever fault code the display shows. We can often say what the likely problem is before an engineer is on the way.
