Boiler service in Greenwich

  • Standard gas boilers in the older homes around the town centre
  • Peninsula flats on heat interface units. These are not gas appliances and call for their own kind of check
  • Homes in the conservation area where getting to the flue shapes how the service is done

Greenwich town centre houses are tall and narrow, and the boiler is often at one extreme: in a basement kitchen or in a top-floor cupboard under the roof. Older installations in those houses sometimes flue into an original chimney through a liner, and checking that flue properly matters more than on a boiler that vents straight through an outside wall. In listed buildings the flue was often placed where it was allowed rather than where it was easiest, so reaching the terminal can take some planning. Out towards Blackheath the houses are larger, with more floors of radiators for one boiler to serve, and towards Charlton there are terraces and ex-council flats with combis in kitchens. Plenty of flats across SE10 are let, and landlords here often book the gas safety check alongside the service. Parking near the town centre is tight and controlled, and weekends are busy with visitors, so weekday slots are simpler.

Questions

Questions we often get

Do you work in Greenwich?

We do. Greenwich falls within Greenwich, covering the SE10, SE3, SE7 postcodes, and our engineers are out across Greater London from our Fulham office every day.

Does a heat interface unit need servicing the way a boiler does?

Checking it now and then helps, but it is not a gas appliance, so this is not a gas service. Over time the plate heat exchanger scales up and the controls drift, and either shows as poor hot water. It is worth having done, but it is not the same job as a boiler service, so we would quote for it on its own.

My boiler flues into an old chimney. Is that still safe?

It can be, provided the chimney has a liner and is sound and clear, and the boiler is designed for that type of flue. On a chimney flue the service includes testing that fumes are drawing upwards rather than spilling back into the room. Birds’ nests, fallen brickwork and a corroded liner are the usual problems. If we find one, we explain what it means and what fixing it involves before anything else is done.

How much will it cost?

Before an engineer starts, you are given a price for the job. Should something hidden in a wall change what is needed, we stop and discuss it with you first, instead of pressing on and sending the bill later.
