Drain unblocking in Croydon

On Croydon’s suburban plots the outside drain runs are long, with more inspection chambers and gullies than you find at an inner London terrace. There are more spots for a blockage, but also more points to put in a rod or camera.

Drain unblocking in Croydon

  • Long outside drain runs with several inspection chambers and gullies
  • Plenty of access points, which usually makes rodding and camera surveys simple
  • Blockages on the stretch from the house to the boundary

Most drain calls in Croydon’s suburban streets start outside rather than in. A 1930s semi typically has a gully by the back door taking the kitchen sink and a downpipe, another at the front, and an inspection chamber somewhere along the side passage. Over the years many of those chambers have vanished under block paving or a new driveway, and finding the cover can take longer than clearing the blockage. Pairs of semis often share a single pipe for the last stretch to the sewer, and a blockage in that stretch can show at next door’s gully first. Gardens wash leaves and silt into open gullies every autumn, and kitchen fat sets hard where the waste drops in. Closer to the town centre it changes: flats above shops, rear service yards and waste pipes shared with the business below, where lifting a cover may first need agreeing with the shop or the managing agent.

Questions

Questions we often get

Do you work in Croydon?

We do. Croydon falls within Croydon, covering the CR0, CR2, SE25, SW16 postcodes, and our engineers are out across Greater London from our Fulham office every day.

At what point does the drain stop being my responsibility?

Roughly at the edge of your property. Past that point it is usually the shared sewer, which Thames Water looks after. Before doing any work you should not be paying for, we will confirm on which side of that line the blockage sits.

The gully outside my kitchen overflows when it rains. Is the drain blocked?

Possibly, but look at the gully first. Lift the grid if you can and see whether water is sitting in it. If the gully is full and the next chamber along is empty, the blockage is in the short length between them, often fat and leaves. If the chamber is full as well, the problem is further down. A gully that only overflows in a downpour and then drains may simply be taking more roof water than it can cope with.

How much will it cost?

Before an engineer starts, you are given a price for the job. Should something hidden in a wall change what is needed, we stop and discuss it with you first, instead of pressing on and sending the bill later.
