A CCTV drain survey pushes a waterproof camera through the pipe and records what it finds, which is genuinely useful information — but it is not the right first step for an ordinary blockage, and a good engineer will say so rather than sell you one anyway.

When it is not needed

A single, first-time blockage that clears with rodding or jetting does not usually need a camera afterwards. If the drain runs freely once cleared and there is no reason to think anything is damaged, a survey adds cost without adding useful information. Unblocking it properly is the whole job in that case.

When it genuinely earns its cost

  1. The same drain has blocked repeatedly, which suggests something structural rather than a one-off clog.
  2. You are buying a property and want to know the condition of the drainage before completion, not after.
  3. There is a sudden bad smell, a wet patch in the garden, or a sunken area that suggests a collapsed or cracked pipe underground.
  4. An insurer or a warranty claim requires documented evidence of what is actually wrong.

In any of those, the footage shows exactly where a defect is and what kind it is, which then decides the fix — whether that is another round of clearing, or an actual drain repair such as relining or a section replaced.

What the report actually gives you

A proper survey comes with a written report and, usually, the footage itself, showing the condition of the pipe, any cracks, root ingress, or misaligned joints, and roughly where along the run the problem sits. That is what turns "the drain keeps blocking" into an actual, costed repair rather than paying to clear the same blockage every few months.

Our CCTV drain survey page explains how a survey works, and the drainage services page covers everything from a blocked sink to a collapsed pipe.
